YMCA, SBC AND BAYVIEW MAGIC ANNOUNCE OPENING OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY CENTER TO THE BAYVIEW HUNTERS POINT CHILDREN

On July 1, 2005, the Bayview YMCA, SBC and Bayview MAGIC (Mobilization for Adolescent Growth in our Communities" will open a new Computer Technology Center at the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA, located at 1601 Lane Street, for children and youth age 5-17.

The center, which will be open from Monday to Friday from 3:00-6:00pm, will feature 24 computers with free high speed internet access, and will offer a variety of learning modules, available to users.

Bayview MAGIC is a collaboration of 40 youth agencies in Bayview Hunters Point, formed by the SF Public Defender's office last year. MAGIC approached the Bayview YMCA, and with the support of SBC's Excelerator grant program, they began developing plans for the center earlier this year.

"This center is a collaboration between a number of community technology groups that serve youth, including Op-Net, CompuMentor, the BVHP Arts & Technology Center (BAYCAT), the Youth Guidance Center Improvement Committee, the Community Computer Center, and Kids Computer Kamp," said SF Public Defender Jeff Adachi, noting that the partnering agencies will help provide training at the center. "Youth can come here and obtain basic computer training skills which will enable them to participate in more comprehensive training such as website design." The Center will also have a part-time training instructor who will be on site to teach youth.

"We are very excited about our partnership with BMAGIC and bringing a technology program to the YMCA," said Bayview YMCA director Cheryl Smith. Smith said that over 400 children, youth and their families access services at the Bayview YMCA each year.

Ken Mintz, area representative for SBC, said that the Excelerator grant program was designed to bring technology to communities that are traditionally underserved. "SBC is committed to supporting the technology needs of our inner-city youth and families, and providing learning opportunities to help them succeed," Mintz said.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will open the grand opening of the center this Friday, July 1, 2005, between 3:00-6:00pm. For more information, please call (415) 905-9100 or visit www.bayviewmagic.com.
